Transformative courses

During my career as a student at the University of Florida I gained valuable knowledge that can be implemented in my professional career. Some skills I learned in courses taken are community engagement, leadership, teamwork, data analysis, and systems thinking. Listed below are some courses which aided in the development of these skills.

Introduction to Social and Economic Perspectives on the Community:

This course introduces the study of community in American society. I learned the theoretical underpinnings of the concept of community and explored changes that have affected urban and rural communities. Throughout this course I worked with group members researching a local organization that works with the Gainesville community and saw how they program aided in community development and success.

Facets of Sustainability:

In this course I learned theory and practices of sustainability from a variety of topical concerns and academic fields. I studied challenges of pursuing sustainability through debates, group research projects, and guest lectures from prominent figures in Sustainability.

Applied Research Methods:

In this course I gained the ability to understand and apply the principles of social science research methods. I also learned a variety of research methods and had hands-on experience with data collection and analysis through the SPSS system. I worked with three other students as a team and  we conducted a study on parental support and self-esteem.

Planning and Evaluating Family, Youth, and Community Sciences Programs:

Throughout this course I learned the basic philosophy, theory and process of planning and evaluating for family, youth and community programs. I was on a team and together we conducted research on a program targeted towards a wicked issue in a specific community and planned out a mock evaluation for this program. These skills will allow me to create efficient programs and work with others well in the future.
